Search in Pfam database.

General tips on searching in Pfam database
The search program searches in the pfam accession number (trivial), Pfam name and Description.
The search page will be displayed in the same window and will be hyper-linked to Pfam families found as hits. The 'hit' regions will be highlighted.
NOTE: The searches are case-insensitive and thus you can search for any of Kinase, kinase, KiNaSe, KINase and it will fetch you the same results.

In case you want to search for kinases there can be three different ways to do it. The results obtained using the same query are shown below.
  • Using AND from the drop down menu :
If you search for "protein kinase" using 'AND' in the drop down box it might fetch you the following results (only for demonstration):

Accession number Name of family Description of family
PF00288.13 GHMP_kinases GHMP kinases putative ATP-binding protein
PF04988.2 AKAP95 A-kinase anchoring protein 95 (AKAP95)
PF06798.2 PrkA PrkA serine protein kinase C-terminal domain
PF05445.1 Pox_ser-thr_kin Poxvirus serine/threonine protein kinase
PF05422.2 SIN1 Stress-activated map kinase interacting protein 1 (SIN1)
PF05716.2 AKAP_110 A-kinase anchor protein 110 kDa (AKAP 110)
PF03261.5 CDK5_activator Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 activator protein

NOTE : The order of the terms does not matter.
  • Using OR from the drop down menu :
If you search for "protein kinase" using 'OR' in the drop down box, it will fetch you the following results:

PF02148.8 zf-UBP Zn-finger in ubiquitin-hydrolases and other protein
PF07730.2 HisKA_3 Histidine kinase
PF02566.7 OsmC OsmC-like protein
PF00897.7 Orbi_VP7 Orbivirus inner capsid protein VP7
PF01649.7 Ribosomal_S20p Ribosomal protein S20
PF04127.4 DFP DNA / pantothenate metabolism flavoprotein
PF00294.12 PfkB pfkB family carbohydrate kinase
PF04924.2 Pox_A6 Poxvirus A6 protein

NOTE : If one of the query terms is found within another word (e.g. 'protein' in 'flavoprotein' in search item 6 in above table), it is still considered as a hit. The above table does not show the results obtained in the 'AND' mode search. In the case of real searches this would not happen.
  • Using Phrase from the drop down menu :
If you search for "protein kinase" using 'Phrase' in the drop down box, it will fetch you the following results.

PF05445.1 Pox_ser-thr_kin Poxvirus serine/threonine protein kinase
PF02827.5 PKI cAMP-dependent protein kinase inhibitor
PF04739.4 AMPKBI 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase, beta subunit, complex-interacting region
PF06798.2 PrkA PrkA serine protein kinase C-terminal domain

NOTE : if the search term is contained in another word, it will not be picked in this mode. For example, if the line "flavoprotein kinase" existed in the database, it will not be picked due to the fact that 'protein kinase' does not exist as a phrase in this line.
